James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, has officially announced the next installment in his Superman saga: Man of Tomorrow. The movie is slated for release on July 9, 2027. Gunn revealed the news on social media alongside a striking teaser image drawn by iconic DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee, which depicts Superman standing playfully alongside his archenemy, Lex Luthor, who is shown wearing his signature green Kryptonite-powered suit of power armor.
The teaser image hints at a dynamic evolution in the relationship between these rivals, with Superman holding a screwdriver as he leans casually on Luthor’s armored suit. This visual suggests a narrative direction where the traditional severe conflict between the two characters may be nuanced or even collaborative.
Gunn’s announcement aligns with his previously disclosed plan for an interconnected “Superman Saga,” expanding on the momentum built by this summer’s successful Superman reboot. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter last month, Gunn mentioned that he had completed a very detailed treatment for the next chapter and anticipated production to begin soon.
Beyond Man of Tomorrow, DC Studios is pushing forward a robust lineup of superhero projects under Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran’s leadership. Upcoming movies include Supergirl (set for June 26, 2026), Clayface (September 11, 2026), and the anticipated next Wonder Woman film. Moreover, Matt Reeves’ sequel, The Batman II, will premiere in December 2027, though it exists outside Gunn’s DC Universe continuity.
The 2027 calendar is shaping into a significant year for DC’s cinematic universe, with Gunn emphasizing a strong focus on script development to avoid production delays, setting it apart from some recent blockbuster franchises. This strategic approach aims to deliver coherent storytelling across multiple properties, including planned TV series such as Peacemaker Season 2 and a new Lanterns series.
This announcement underscores the accelerating pace of DC Studios’ ambitions to expand their franchise with fresh, interconnected stories that could redefine familiar characters. As fans await the July 2027 release, speculation grows about the direction Man of Tomorrow will take and the broader shape of the DC Universe going forward.
For now, Man of Tomorrow promises to continue James Gunn’s distinct approach to superhero storytelling, combining character depth with blockbuster spectacle to keep audiences engaged.
